Committee Reports:
5.1: Maintenance: (Jim Booy). It’s been a bad week for sanders. The Grizzly is down, but the parts are now in. Since some members have disregarded “out of order” signs on sanders, he sandpaper will be removed until the machine is repaired.
5.2: Training: A new class starts Monday. May will be the last training class for the summer unless the number of new members warrants one.
5.3: Suggestion Box (Dave Wierenga)
5.3.1 That a washer be added to #27 lathe to make it bottom out on the drive head.
Ans: Will ask Maintenance about accomplishing the same end by milling out some threads.
5.3.2. That the shop be closed at 3.p.m. and those present do cleanup.
Ans. It’s a thought, but probably not workable. We do need to find better ways to keep the shop clean during the week.
5.3.3. Improve bandages and antibiotics in the First Aid box.
Ans. This will be added to Saturday morning chores.
5.3.4. Purchase a small plunge router (what we have is too large for some jobs.
Ans. Gary Roberts has one that he’ll sell to the club.
5.3.5. Buy a Klein thread-cutting jig for lidded bowls. Dave Wierenga has looked into this and found another kind that costs less but there is some question about how many members would use it. This matter was tabled until the August board meeting.
5.4: Monitoring (Gary Roberts). As members leave for summer, slots may become hard to fill. Shop managers need to remind monitors to stick to the machine area.
5.5: Lockers (Jim Booy): There are still some available. There was discussion about rents for larger lockers and when to clear out a locker when a member passes away.
5.6: Housekeeping (Dave Boulet)
New people in charge of Housekeeping: Art Breese and. Ted Murphree
May—September 2nd & 4th Saturdays: Housekeeping
May—September 1st & 3rd Saturdays: Maintenance
5.7: Safety (Larry Smith)
No accidents this month!

Old Business
6.1 Security System: Mike has found a 20” monitor. He and Larry will work on installation.
6.2 The Charter Club Expo was a success and will probably be repeated next year. Mike will request more space between the tables and that lawn sprinklers be turned off until everyone has cleared up.
6.3 Bob Cordelli has completed the bell centers for the lathes.
6.4 The Sew club has looked at our monitor aprons and suggested elastic bands on the sides. The aprons can be slipped on over the head. Several aprons will be so modified to try it out.

New Business
7.1 Contributions for ROWW: Marshall & Nancy Oaks: $100.00; Tom Grilli: money for a sheet of plywood. ROWW handled two raffles; some proceeds go to the club in general, some to ROWW activities. The Interfaith Community Care center and Del Webb rehab centers are among organizations needing woodwork puzzles and furnishings.
7.2 Request for a medical exemption from monitoring was okayed.
7.3 Bob Cordelli attended a woodturning conference in Sun City and displayed the smooth cut made by a joiner with carbide blades. That club has carbide blades on a joiner and planer. The blades are costly but ours require frequent sharpening. Bob suggested we talk more to the Sun City woodworkers about costs and endurance of the blades.
7.4 Spring Picnic is next week, following a brief business meeting.
7.5 We are sorry to report that two members have passed away: Ben Nesbitt Bob Schacht
7.6 Dates for 2010 events:
Spring Picnic/General Meeting: Tuesday, April 6, 2010
Fall Picnic: Tuesday, October 12, 2010
Winter Party Wednesday, December 8, 2010
7.7 Swipe card at exit door: Mike has gotten a bid from Select Security Systems but is seeking a less expensive option through a locksmith friend. Russ Boston of Rec. Center maintenance says it’s okay to have the hardware installed as long as it doesn’t affect the key mechanism and door hardware
7.8 Sanders: Gary is trying to find out who damaged two of the sanders in one day. Dave Whitehouse will look into some system of badge-swiping to turn on machines so we know who’s using them when. Gene is considering ways to tell easily if a drum sander is running, such as orange tape on the conveyor.
7.9 In our continued spirit of collaboration, the Metal Shop may ask us to help them with new cabinets.
-
Round Table Discussion:
Gary Roberts: Large paintbrushes may be easier to use than the foxtail brushes for cleaning around the chop saws with hoods.
Dave Wierenga: Stressed the need (mentioned last month by Dick Cox) for closer monitoring of sanders and perhaps some control on their use. There is also a problem with propping open the Tool Crib door, which should be kept locked for good reasons.
Dave Whitehouse: We have a new badge reader program to handle both doors that seems to be effective. There was discussion of how to handle two monitor shifts in the same day--making sure the member gets proper credit. Gene Nieman reported to him that when he came into the shop one morning the Tool Crib and Lumber Room were standing open. Apparently those using the shop the previous evening didn’t lock up. Those using the shop in the evenings need to be more careful. We also need to continue to consider raising dues.
Jim Booy stressed that the club needs to have a key to every locker. He is also going to notify those who haven’t paid their rent or come to him for new padlocks that their locks will be cut off.
Larry Smith: There was an incident where a member couldn’t find a tool that had been checked out. There’s no way to know if another tool was turned in instead, or if someone was given the wrong chip. Also, Gene Nieman is concerned that too many people may have keys to the Maintenance room.
Mike Bell asked for bigger hooks in the tool crib to hold the chips.
