SCW Woodworking Club
Board of Directors Meeting
June 30, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Mike Bell at 9:00   a.m.

  1. Roll call of Board Members: Pres. Mike Bell, 2nd VP Marvin Otto, Secretary Louise Carroll, Dir. Jim Booy, Dir. Lou Fucilo, Dir. Forrest Lynn.
  2. Motion to accept minutes of last meeting: Marvin Otto;  2nd: Lou Fucilo

  3. Guest: Fred Baldwin for Dave Whitehouse
  4. Treasurer’s Report:
Motion to accept report: Jim Booy, 2nd: Marvin Otto

  5. Committee Reports:
5.1  Maintenance: (Mike for Gene Nieman)
We’ve bought several small tools and Incra jigs for table saw and router table.  Maintenance will be every weekend starting September.  A GFCI outlet was installed over the new sink area in the machine room.
           5.2  Suggestion Box (Marvin Otto):
Suggestions dealt with in the June Board meeting were reviewed and updated for the General Meeting.
                   1. Lever handles on the faucets. Done
                   2. Allowance for social visits without using credits. A club member who wishes to come in just to visit may be admitted by the shop manager or a board member.  They will sign in at the tool crib, where we will have a guest roster.
                   3.  Protective sleeves for lathe face masks. They wouldn’t keep masks from getting scratched because most damage occurs during use. Members who do a lot of turning are advised to buy their own.
                   4. Purchase a new right-angle and straight battery-powered drill. The present stock of drills is adequate.
                   5. Lights on scroll saws.  Done.
                   6. Withholding credit from shop managers who do not empty trash cans.  Making sure that every trash can is empty at the end of a shift isn’t always possible.
                   7. Bigger holes in the plastic chips to make it easier to hang them in the tool crib.  The easier solution is thinner hooks.
           New suggestions:
5.2.1. That we purchase two core box router bits in 7/8- and 1-inch diameters.  We’ll talk to Gene about it when he returns.
5.2.2 When Forstner bits are checked out of the tool crib, users should be reminded that they should be used only on the slow-speed drill press. The board will make sure that drill press is marked for Forstner use.
5.2.3. Replace worn 3.5” wheels on the metal carts with 5” wheels. Members who notice a damaged wheel on a cart should notify maintenance and leave the cart by the maintenance room door.
5.2.4  Date and mark refrigerator contents and toss them after ten days.  A good idea that will be implemented.
5.2.5. Replace the tenoning jig, which is worn and doesn’t produce accurate results. The board voted to approve the purchase of a new one if Gene agrees that it’s necessary.

5.3. Lockers (Jim Booy). Supply seems to roughly match demand. There are a few metal ones available.  Fees for lockers rented in early fall will be prorated.

5.4. Housekeeping.  Cleanup is still on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Weekly cleanup starts in October. Art Breese and Ted Murphree continue to do a great job.

5.5 Library (Fred Baldwin). We had an anonymous donation of some 500 magazines. Fred used these to fill in gaps in our library and will attempt to sell the rest on Craig’s List.

5.6 Safety  There was one accident this month, when a member cut his hand in a kickback on a table saw.  What contributed to the accident was that he was holding the pusher too close to the fence and the splitter was not in place.  Splitters are not required but are highly recommended for most cuts.  Two lessons for all of us: the official emergency response team asks that we not clean up  blood before they arrive (it helps them assess the injury) and if there is any chance the injured member may suffer shock, he or she should be laid down on the floor.
  6. Old Business
6.1  Rec Center proposal to limit club board members to three consecutive years.  This is on the agenda for the September Rec. board meeting (today). One problem is that the IRS has concerns about club treasurers who have held their positions for a long time. The matter will also be discussed at the Chartered Club meeting in October.

6.2 Moving metal lockers and scroll saws - done.

6.3 Coffee area and machine room cabinets and sinks are done. Thanks to Gary Roberts, Tom Breneman, Dave Wierenga, Gafford Jackson, Don Butticci, and Bill Frey.

6.4. There is an estimate of about $2k for installing a swipe card system at the back door. This will be mentioned at today’s General Meeting and if there is a quorum we can vote on it in the October meeting.

6.5 Lights in the assembly room and remaining lights in the machine room will have bulbs and low-wattage ballasts replaced (this month, we hope).
  7. New Business
           7.1. Members and family who have passed away;
                   Don Prewitt
                   Frank Tucker’s wife
Ellen Zacko’s mother, who was also mother-in-law of Ed Zacko and Dave Boulet.

    Illnesses;
Larry Smith has been in the hospital in Minnesota with pneumothorax of one lung.

7.2.  The Fall Picnic will be Tuesday, Oct. 13.

7.3.  Election of officers for 2010.  A nomination signup sheet will be posted by Oct. 1. Nominations will cease on Tuesday, Nov. 3 (General Meeting). Bob Zickau has agreed to handle nominations again this year.

7.4.  Work continues on the check-in computer. The motherboard went out in early August. Fred Baldwin has been working on it. At present it will record card swipes but not unlock the door.  Monitor credits are being installed manually by Verda Bell and Jean Ohlde. The monitor sign-up computer seems to be functioning OK for now.

7.5. Events for 2010 (times reserved)
                   Spring Picnic/General Meeting: Tuesday, April 6 (9 a.m. to 3. p.m.)

                   Christmas Party: Wednesday, Dec. 15 (1 p.m. to 10 p.m.)

7.6.  The pop machine has been fixed.

7.7 A member of the maintenance crew has written a letter commending Gene Nieman for his expertise, tireless service and can-do attitude. Right-on!

7.8. Wood Club members who are elected to the Rec. Center Board and/or the PORA board were voted temporary monitoring exemptions during their term in office. (Mike moved and Jim seconded). Current members affected are Ron Gillmeister and Doug Rhodes

7.9. Two members were given permanent monitor exemptions for their continual outstanding service to the club:  Gene Neiman, head of Maintenance and former Board member; and Fred Baldwin, Librarian, former Board member, former Treasurer, backup Treasurer, computer backup. (Mike moved, Forrest seconded).

Move to adjourn: Jim Booy; seconded by Marvin Otto.
    Meeting adjourned at 10:04 a.m.

Respectfully submitted by Louise Carroll, Secretary.
